Do you feel self-conscious about your smile because of broken, chipped, or misaligned teeth? Fortunately, braces are a highly recommended and proven orthodontic treatment for beautifying your smile and straightening uneven teeth.

Talk to us at Florida Dental Solutions to learn about the many benefits of wearing braces for your overall oral health and appearance.

When Do You Need Braces?

There are many teens and adults who don’t feel very confident due to:

  • Broken, chipped, misshapen, misaligned teeth
  • Under-bite or over-bite

Braces provide a permanent solution to this problem. Do you always cover your mouth while laughing to hide your overbite? Wearing braces won’t only align your jaw and teeth, it will also take your personal confidence to a new level!

One of the most important reasons patients choose braces is to improve their smile and boost their self-esteem. A beautiful, symmetrical smile that comes as a result of wearing braces can go a long way in enhancing self-image.

Also, misaligned teeth can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, which is commonly referred to as tooth wear. Braces can help rectify that condition while improving your overall oral health.

How to Determine If You Need Braces

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, everyone should have their first orthodontic visit by age seven. But it is never too late even for adults who are considering wearing braces, especially when there are so many options available these days.

When you visit our office for a braces consultation, we will evaluate your smile and position of your teeth to suggest the perfect orthodontic treatment plan for you. Generally speaking, if you suffer from any of the following issues, you may benefit the most from a braces treatment from us:

NN
Underbite

When your lower teeth protrude over the upper teeth.

NN
Overbite

When the upper jaw protrudes beyond the lower jaw.

NN
Open Bite

When some space remains between the lower and upper teeth when your jaw is closed.

NN
Crossbite

When the lower and upper jaws do not align with each other.

NN
Crowded Teeth

When the teeth overlap, or they are too close to each other.

NN
Gapped Teeth

When the teeth are spaced too far apart.

In order to design an orthodontic treatment plan specific to you, our dentist will take impressions of your teeth and bite, dental x-rays, and other information as required.

How Does the Braces Procedure Work?

Here are a few simple steps that go into achieving a perfect smile with braces:

ZZ
Consultation

During your first dental visit, our orthodontist will study your smile and design a personalized braces treatment plan.

hh
Appointment for Placing Spacers

Before getting braces, you will need to have spacers put between your molars to create room for the orthodontic rubber bands. This appointment is usually made a week before the bonding appointment.

Appointment for Bonding Your Braces

As the name suggests, here our orthodontist will bond the brackets to the teeth and places the bands and the wire during your visit.

UU
Regular Adjustment Appointments

You will need to visit our office at pre-determined intervals during the treatment to adjust your braces. The entire treatment with braces generally takes anywhere from 18 to 24 months.

ll
Appointment for De-Bonding the Braces

After the treatment is complete, your dental brackets will be removed and our orthodontist will take your dental impressions to create a retainer.

Follow-Up Appointment

Our orthodontist may suggest scheduling an appointment approximately 18 months after your braces are removed to make sure your teeth continue to remain firmly in their new position.

How Do Braces Work?

Braces align your teeth by applying continuous pressure over a period of time to gradually move the teeth in a desirable direction. The pressure is regularly adjusted over the course of the treatment plan. Depending on the severity of the patient’s case, the entire treatment can last from 1 to 3 years.

Fortunately, there are numerous options available when it comes to orthodontic braces. From new clear braces that are nearly invisible to traditional metal braces, you can choose anything you want depending upon your preference and budget.

What Are the Orthodontic Options Available for Adults?

We offer multiple treatment options for adult patients who want to straighten their teeth without the hassle of highly-visible traditional metal braces.

From invisible braces to porcelain veneers – that are also called “instant orthodontics” – a variety of options are available for adults who wish to transform their smile discreetly and conveniently!

What Are the Orthodontic Options Suitable for Children?

According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), kids should be at least seven years of age to meet with an orthodontist and undergo a dental screening. That’s because most growth-related dental issues can be identified at this age. Ninety percent of a child’s face has already developed by the age of 12.

In cases where problems are detected at an earlier stage, suitable treatment can be delivered to guide and improve facial development. Also, early orthodontic treatment is usually less complicated than the procedures needed to rectify more severe problems that can develop later in life.

Making Your Smile Stay Straight and Beautiful

It is important to understand that you will have to follow the after-care steps recommended by our orthodontist to make sure your teeth stay in alignment.

You will be provided with a custom retainer that you’ll have to wear on a nightly basis or as prescribed. This will ensure your teeth don’t move out of their new position.

Make sure to visit our orthodontist at least twice a year so they can monitor your new smile. Growth of wisdom teeth or other issues may create a misalignment in your teeth, so it’s best to have our dentist address any potential problems well in time.
